Plowman Brown Architects was formed in 1997 when the two partners, Mary Plowman and Malcolm Brown, created the new practice. Prior to that Mary Plowman had been a partner in Plowman Short between 1985 and 1994, and a sole practitioner from 1994 to 1997, and Malcolm Brown had been partner/director/managing director in Levitt Bernstein Associates between 1971 and 1997.


In the past, the work of the two partners has consisted of:

Design and implementation of numerous commercial and residential schemes for private and publicly funded clients; detailed design of interiors for numerous private clients; analysis of user requirements; liaison with tenants and occupants; rehabilitation and new build; substantial landscaping works associated with the schemes. Largely concentrated in London, these projects include the rehabilitation of a number of listed houses and terraces as well as a great variety of the Georgian and Victorian Housing stock.


Commercial projects including refurbishment schemes for Cosprop Ltd (theatrical costumiers), dealing rooms for commodity traders (Solomon Brothers), corporate headquarters for media companies (Channel 4 Television).


Arts buildings, including the Royal Exchange Theatre Manchester. The practice acted as consultant to Levitt Bernstein Associates on the rebuilding project for the theatre following the Manchester bombing.


The design of production facilities for Madame Tussauds, Spitting Image Productions, and the Royal Exchange Theatre Manchester


Feasibility Studies for museum, concert hall and theatre developments.
